"From the photos in this volume, we almost don’t see the frustrations Wang Qiuhang
suffered throughout those years. In some he is smiling at the camera, in others holding
an exaggerated pose, but there is not a single gloomy expression to be seen.
Taking a 'selfie' became a sanctuary from the cold reality. Those smiles and poses
are an expression of his private life, photography realizing his dreams. In these 'selfies'
one can see the common aspirations that marked that era." |

When Wang Qiuhang's father commited suicide, his life changed dramatically. "I was not reconciled
to this situation, however, and insisted on following my Red Guard group to Beijing, where
I took a photo of myself in Tiananmen Square holding my Little Red Book (Quotations from

For the rest of his youth, Wang wanted nothing more but to be a soldier. However, because of his family background, all of his efforts to enlist were denied and he could only fulfill his dream in photos, here posing in a mock battle scene. (Wang Qiuhang, Heilongjiang, 1970) |
